The Shortlisted Artwork
Stains consists of old iron bed frame whose gridded framework has been reused and subsequently reconfigured in order to support panels of stained glass. Jordan draws out the juxtaposition between the rusted metal of the bed and the fragility of the glass itself. This carefully considered contrast is also attenuated through symbolic schism between the sexual connotations of the used bed and the religious connotations of the Virgin Mary whose representation is embedded within the work.

Artist Statement
Maureen Jordan’s practice incorporates found objects and materials into a diverse array of sculptures and installations. Cast-away items that bear signs of use and misuse are intermeshed with materials that commonly hold greater value, such as stained glass. Jordan’s work also makes ample use of pattern and seriality to great effect, highlighting the poetic depth and complexity of overlooked materials through dynamic and colourful configurations. Although her work does not advertently reference Northern Ireland where Jordan grew up, it is rooted in her cultural identity.
Having worked in arts administration as a project manager, fundraiser and producer, Jordan’s exposure to the arts has extended far beyond her own practice. It has also involved collaborative efforts with other artists and designers in the realms of recycling and urban redevelopment. She has been developing her own practice independently since 2009.
